New leadership team for Southwark ahead of next election

24 May 2021

Cllr Kieron Williams, Leader of Southwark Council, has unveiled his new Cabinet team to lead Southwark for the next twelve months up to the next local elections in May 2022.

Kieron has invited two new Cllrs to join the Cabinet, Councillor Darren Merrill who represents North Walworth ward and Cllr Jason Ochere of St Giles ward. Meanwhile Cllr Johnson Situ decided to stand down from Cabinet after five years in the role.

The Leader has also reshuffled portfolios to cover the full breadth of change we all want to see in our Borough.

You can see the full Cabinet line up and all their responsibilities in the document at the bottom of this page.

Cllr Williams said of the new appointments:

"As we cautiously emerge from the pandemic, your new Cabinet will spend the next twelve months continuing to deliver on the issues that matter most; tackling the housing crisis, supporting our local economy, delivering a new Youth Deal and greening our Borough to deal with the Climate Emergency.

This is not a Cabinet who will just exist to manage services. We will work to transform our borough; to make it a fairer, more equitable and greener place to live, work and raise a family. It is a Cabinet that exists not only to serve our communities, but to be a part of them and reflect their views and aspirations within the Council and amongst our partners in the borough.

We will be a campaigning Cabinet, who will press the government where it is required to act and we will defend our communities wherever government decisions undermine our ambitions or offend our values.

Importantly, Southwark's Cabinet will remain one of the most diverse, including 70% women, because we know that when all voices are included at the highest levels, we make better policy and our council is stronger for it.

Finally, I also want to say thank you to Cllr Johnson Situ who has decided to stand down from Cabinet after five years of incredible service. He is a friend and colleague whose advice has always steered us in the right direction and he will be missed. I wish him the very best for the future."
