This Christmas marks 100 days of Southwark Labour’s new leadership. Leader Cllr Williams and Deputy Leader Cllr Ali would like to thank Southwark’s 48 hard working Labour councillors & the council's amazing staff for everything they have achieved in that time.
2020 has been the most difficult year we have faced in a generation. We stand on the shoulders of giants. After a decade of delivering for the people of our borough, Southwark Labour has stepped up again this year to support our community through these dark times.
We want to share just a few of the things your Labour Council has delivered for the people of our borough over the last 100 days:
- Funded 10,500 free school meals in half term when the government refused
- Launched a 35 self-contained room winter shelter for people sleeping rough in partnership with the Robes Project
- Launched the ‘Open Door’ campaign to create more safe spaces for Domestic Abuse survivors
- Launched a new Allotment Expansion Guarantee, planning with residents 200 new growing plots on estate land
- Supported vulnerable residents through the pandemic with 1,300 proactive wellbeing calls and an additional £200,000 investment in community hubs as part of our support for vulnerable residents in the pandemic
- Opened a new special school for children with Autism
- £20,000 provided to Community Christmas appeal to support older and vulnerable people
- Announced £3.5m for community infrastructure projects
- Supported 30 plus organisations to celebrate Black History Month through small grants
- Built a new Library in Walworth
- 1500 smart phones distributed to residents who are digitally excluded
- Launched a Youth Offer to support young people into work, training or volunteering
- Children's services won overwhelming praise for commitment to children, young people and families by Ofsted
- Youth Offending Services nationally acclaimed for commitment to young people by HM Inspectorate of Probation
- Over 150 units social homes approved
- Switching to renewable electricity across council operations and housing
- Placing the community at the heart of planning with Southwark’s first Community Review Panel
- Started construction on a new nursing care home in Camberwell
- 15 road closures to improve air quality next to schools
- Bought property on Old Kent Road to further demonstrate our support for the Bakerloo Line, and bring more income to the Council
- Created the largest rooftop housing programme in Europe
- Crossed the half-way stage of over 1250 council homes (of a 2500 target) either delivered or on site
- Implemented the Health Ambassadors programme to circulate the latest and most accurate Covid advice
- Developed and implemented the process for Covid lateral flow testing
- 32 cycle hangars so people can travel and safely store their bikes
- Maintained our top 3 position in the Great Parks for London Scheme
- Welcomed 200th visitor to our free child and adolescent mental health drop in centre
- Opened the new Ageing Well hub with a base at Southwark Resource Centre
